What Makes You Tick?

An idol is something you can't control in your life, or anything on we set our affections; that to which we indulge an excessive and sinful attachment. Idolatry is an immoderate attachment or devotion to something other than God. An idol is anything which usurps the place of God in our hearts. Different idols control every sinner - what makes you tick?  Take a close look at your spending habits, addictions, longings, cravings, ambitions, fantasizing, and thought life.

* What do you spend too much money on?
* What do you throw money at without argument?
* What do you think of most throughout the day?
* What does your mind feed on?
* What is your chief habit of life?
* What produces your strongest emotions and excitement?
* Who are you trying to please?
* What is your security and what significance are you seeking?
* What is it that you cannot live without?
* What is your master passion?
* What known bad habit do you tolerate and excuse in your life?
* What do you worry about most?
* What consumes your thoughts?
* What runs you?
* What rules your actions from day to day?
* What consumes your thoughts throughout the day?
* Does food, sex, TV, drugs, music, internet, sleep, alcohol, car, religion, friends, tobacco, sports, work, fun, stuff, porn, or cigarettes have control of you?
* What bad habits (privately or publicly) do you struggle with?
* How do you spend your free time?
* Where does your mind love to rest?
* Where do you spend your money most effortlessly? food, clothes, entertainment, self-indulgence?
* Do you have uncontrollable emotions or guilt you can't get rid of?
* What is more important than God to you?
* Do you think there is a sin in your past that is too great for God to forgive?
* Is there something that could happen that would make you feel you have no reason to live?
* Are you sensitive, easily hurt, irritated, depressed, or discouraged? If you are constantly watching for insults, slights and always hypersensitive, this is the idol of self.  Are you overprotective of your feelings?

And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them. They are mad upon their idols. These men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face. They are all estranged from God through their idols. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. Ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day. And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
